Those of you who are keeping me company on my latest attempt at fitness in mind and body, will know I recently took up yoga but had decided not to get a mat in case it was a five minute wonder.
Events were taken out of my hands on Tuesday last week. I mentioned my new activity in a mobile message to the firstborn and lo and behold, two days later, a purple yoga mat arrived by post! Not only that, but my surprise gift was accompanied by an additional complementary gift – a small towel with which to mop my brow or hands. (Am I supposed to be working up a sweat?)
Now I have little excuse not to keep up my daily workout. Currently, I’m developing integrity in my torso – so that’s nice.
I have been firmly instructed by my daughter not to share any photos whilst doing ‘nightie-yoga’. How does she know I do that?
After a week of ‘beginners’ yoga’ and then some fairly gentle ten minute workouts, I’ve started a structured thirty day programme. Today was Day-9 and I’m alternated between feeling tender through the intercostal and abdominal muscles. Maybe it’s because I’m now sitting at my desk, working on a fledgling manuscript…
If yoga is something you’ve been thinking about, there are loads of YouTube videos to try, with options for all levels of ability, so start slowly and build up, as I’m doing. I tend to watch first rather than attempt to dive straight in, otherwise the positions I’m getting into don’t bear much resemblance to the lithe-looking lady on the laptop. I suspect she’s made of titanium because nothing ever wobbles.
Final rumination for today: I didn’t realise how difficult it is to balance on one leg! Just when I managed that, I was encouraged to bend my other leg and put an arm out as well. Really glad I was alone when I tipped over.
In spite of the odd hiccup, I’m enjoying it so much more than jogging! Bring on Day-10!!
