… to take up running!
I must confess to being a little concerned when Mr JH announced he wanted to get some running trainers. He’s always been outdoorsy and has completed over 150 Wainwright walks and cycles at least 20 miles each week. However, he informed me he planned to expand his exercise regime. Once we were in the shop, he then decided he wanted shorts with a pocket in the back for his phone and also a florescent top to make him visible on dark mornings.
He has always loved playing golf and once he decided to give up paid employment, the courses of Sussex haven’t known what’s hit them (and he’s keeping the ball manufacturers in business with the amount he loses).
However the running bug hit hard when he went to support his daughter, Mrs HM, in a recent Brighton 10k. He came home bubbling with excitement.
With my sensible head on, I pointed out he needed to make sure he was physically strong enough, so he began with a few gentle circuits of the roads around us and built up from there. Important to mention that his blood pressure is well within normal limits.
So began his training and he has downloaded an app which records his route and time. His exuberance was overwhelming when he broke half an hour for a 5k run.
The upshot is, both he and the aforementioned Mrs HM have now entered a 5k run in Gravesend in July. I will report back after they’ve completed it.
This was him just setting off from home (after the obligatory stretching exercises) on a slightly misty morning with the sun trying to fight its way through an early blanket of cloud.
